“And looking at them Jesus said to them, ‘With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” (Matthew 19:26) Have you ever thought to apply the truth in this verse to your own health journey? It's easy to feel so alone in your efforts to lose weight, eat better, and get fit. It seems beyond impossible at times. We can think that our bodies are beyond His notice and too insignificant for Him to care about. But let me ask you this: Why would God offer His omnipotent assistance to everything else in life, but leave us on our own to figure out how to get healthy and fit? Impossible Things Happening Jesus spoke these words when talking about salvation, saying that it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. I had to chuckle when reading this again, thinking “well, how chubby is this camel we’re talking about? Thirty percent body fat? Would it fit through easier if it drops 20 pounds?” Oh Jesus, you’re funny. All joking aside, the point is this: If you have been saved through Jesus Christ, the impossible has already occurred in your life. You are a living testimony of a miracle! Being on a journey toward weight loss and health is a piece of cake for God. If He can shove fat camels through needles, He can do you too. But it might take a white flag... When Jesus was talking about salvation with the rich man, I hear Him pleading with him to surrender—“Lay down your securities, your comforts, and your idols. Surrender your goals, your friends, and your family. Place all your trust in me, dear one, and you will flourish in my kingdom. I do the impossible. Watch me.” Is He saying this to you right now? Are you stuck in a place where getting from "chubby" and out of shape to fit, healthy and strong seems totally impossible? Perhaps some surrendering needs to happen. Let go of your comforts, your secure environment, and your familiar habits. Put away your selfishness and the cravings/desires that are preventing a breakthrough. Raise the white flag of surrender and say "whatever it takes". Let go. Let God do some impossible. You're not alone... The apostle Paul was no stranger to physical struggles. I doubt he battled with his weight, but I don’t think he was particularly healthy, either. He struggled with what he called a thorn in his flesh, a physical, bodily challenge. And because of this, I know that he relied heavily on Christ to empower him. Where his own physical abilities ended, he trusted that his Savior would take over. Concerning his physical failures and impossibilities, God told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon me…for when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9,10) (By the way, I love this inspiration so much, I wrote more about it here...) Weary of this impossible thing... You might be burnt out, frustrated and at your wit’s end with this struggle. I don’t know how many diets you’ve tried, workout videos you’ve watched, and pounds you’ve lost and regained. But you know and God knows. When it all stacks up, this physical job feels downright impossible. You have probably heard your inner spirit say "there's no way". And you might be right. On your own, you could be totally tapped out and have reached the end of your own ability. But that's exactly when the magic happens. Maybe now is the time to recognize that you have a huge Teammate on your side, ready to work some impossible in you. Trust Him. Talk to Him about your battle. Let Him strengthen you and empower you to get started and keep going when it gets really tough. Paul, recognizing his own shortcomings and inabilities also said this: “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me”. (Philippians 4:13) Remember, God loves to work the impossible, even with this. Are you that camel? Time to get going through that needle!
