Yesterday, the brand new Strong Mommas tanks and shirts went on sale. This is the first time I've sold Strong Mommas merchandise, and I totally love the way they turned out! Many of you had been begging me, literally begging, to get these shirts made. And now here they are, in all their glory! If you haven't gotten one yet, click here to check them out. This is the message on the shirts... It's a lot of words, I know. But quite honestly, it doesn't even begin to fully represent what it means to be a strong momma. As moms, we wear so many hats and fill so many roles, all of which require us to be strong beyond our own capacity. Let me tell you why I chose these particular words. Lifting. As moms, we do a lot of lifting. We lift kids, lift toys, lift groceries, lift couches to find toys, and around here, we especially lift weights. Lifting is what makes us stronger, and we're not afraid of the muscles it creates. When it comes to fitness, weightlifting is our top priority...it's the highest rung on the ladder. Everything else comes below lifting. Without lifting, we could not be strong mommas. We also lift each other up. We're not in this alone. When some of us are strong enough to lift, we'll reach down and pull up the others that aren't. This beautiful dynamic happens every day through encouragement, love, helpful tips, funny stories and prayer. Jumping. Jumping represents our power and athleticism. Our workouts don't just make us strong, they also make us powerful and capable of producing a lot of force. We do squat jumps, box jumps, lunge jumps, star jumps, jumping jacks and all sorts of other jumping movements to develop our power. It's intense, but we're not afraid. We embrace our power and the strength that comes with it. The idea of jumping feels "next level", advanced, and reminds us that we're serious about what we do. We don't just dabble with fitness...strong mommas jump. Sprinting. We don't just run, we sprint. Why? Because when you're strong from lifting and powerful from jumping, you'll want to sprint. Sprinting also creates better athletes and distance runners, it significantly improves our cardiovascular capabilities, and sends our metabolism through the roof. When it comes to cardio, sprinting intervals are the best thing to do, and we certainly don't skimp around here. Sprinting also represents the call on our lives. We're running this race to win it, not to stroll through it. We're giving it all we've got, and someday we'll receive an everlasting crown. "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever." 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 Breathing. We go hard, but we also know when to balance it out with rest. There must be a give and take. Breathing represents our active recovery workouts, our warm-ups and our cool-downs, our sleep and our rest. It shows that we look at the entire body and do all the necessary things that make it operate at its best. We also learn how to actually breathe properly, deeply filling our lungs with air and slowly exhaling while we pay attention to muscle tension and stress. Breathing is essential to life, and proper breathing and patterns of rest are essential to a healthy life. (Click here to learn more about proper breathing technique.) "The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life." Job 33:4 Praying. This is what it boils down to. Praying represents our foundation for all of this. Without an intimate connection and conversation with the One that created our bodies, we lose sight of what's important. We start to pursue fitness and nutrition for all the wrong reasons. We end up exalting ourselves and taking credit for everything. But with prayer, we're reminded. We're reminded of who created and designed us so marvelously. We're reminded of where our strength truly comes from. We're reminded that we need to lift each other up, that we are powerful, that we're running this race to win it, and that sometimes we must be still. Prayer grounds us as moms. Without the word "praying", we are not strong mommas. Strong Mommas. I wish I could add more words to the list. I would have added "cooking", "planning", "prepping", "stretching", "planking", "squatting", "comforting", "hugging", "wiping", "napping", "chocolate loving", "worshiping", "resting", "reading", and "loving". There are simply too many words that fully embody what it means to be a strong momma. My only hope is that you can identify with these ones and embrace what these words mean to you.
