"My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in secret and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth." Psalm 139:15 As moms, how often do we take a step back? From the second our babies are born, we are instantly clothed in humility and selflessness. In that split second of birth, the needs of our baby are far more important than our own. Do you remember labor? In the midst of horrific pain and suffering, the moment your precious one appears, you completely shove aside your own feelings. You only have thoughts for them. Your pain is no longer important. This very attitude continues from then on... and THIS is motherhood. We do this diligently, patiently and from a servant's heart. As we mature as women of God we know that He desires us to put others above ourselves...to lay down our own lives and sacrifice, especially for our children. Which is exactly what God did for us. Yet in the process of taking on so much selflessness, we can quietly forget how wonderful we are. We lose track of how special we are, even as moms. "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139:13-14 When I read Psalm 139, as a mom I identify with that baby being knit together in my womb. I can feel the preciousness, the purpose, the plan. I think of my boys growing inside of me and how even before they emerged, all of their days were ordained by God. But I forget that this verse is also meant for me. Typical, right? All the good promises we place on others, but we fail to recognize God's goodness toward us. These verses are about my boys, but they are also about all of us, as women, moms, grandmas, aunts, sisters, and daughters. "My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth." Psalm 139:15 We are not hidden from Him...we never have been. He not only notices us, but He sees us. He sees me... He sees me when I'm struggling to put the seat belt on the screaming, wiggling child. He sees me when I take the time to make a meal that goes left uneaten. He sees me when I'm doing the dishes in the evening, and my neck is full of knots. He sees me when I wake up early to try and squeeze in a workout before all hell breaks loose. He sees me when I struggle to eat the salad when all I really want is the leftover pizza. He sees me when I'm trying to hold it together, for the good of the family. He sees me when I'm frustrated, overwhelmed, exhausted, irritated, lost, confused, and tired. We feel hidden and totally unnoticed in these mundane moments, in the slog of motherhood. We're the facilitator. The secret servant. The laborer. The hidden mom. It feels like nobody is noticing everything we do. But nothing is hidden from him. You weren't hidden from him when you were being carefully wrought in the depths of the earth, and you're not hidden from him now. Remember that you were once that baby in your momma's tummy, being carefully pieced together and designed. Every day has been ordained for you, even these countless days of secret servant-hood. You were appointed for these days. And none of your tasks are hidden from God. He sees it all when nobody else notices. Let yourself be celebrated today. Let yourself be noticed. Let others serve you and love all over you. And if it feels like nobody is doing any of this, God is celebrating, noticing, serving and loving you today, momma.
